World No Tobacco Day Symposium 2023

5 Jun 2023

The Tobacco Endgame CRE and The University of Queensland hosted a full-day symposium for health professionals, researchers and policy makers on 31 May in Brisbane, coinciding with World No Tobacco Day. This hybrid event was a great opportunity to hear from leading experts in the field about the latest tobacco endgame strategies, research and policies. The symposium commenced with a video message from the Honourable Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care. Presenters included CRE and Interdisciplinary Tobacco Endgame Research Network (INTER-Net) researchers from Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, South Korea and The Netherlands. Shannon Mead, CEO of No More Butts Ltd, joined us live from the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris where he attended the Second Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC2).

Our keynote speakers shared the latest news on Aotearoa/New Zealand’s world-leading Smokefree Action Plan and Australia's National Tobacco Strategy 2022-2030:

Prof Richard Edwards - The Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 plan - Is the endgame in sight?

Prof Raymond Lovett - Australia’s National Tobacco Strategy 2022-30: Incrementalism and Social Justice

Prof Janet Hoek - Pharmacists' views on supplying tobacco as an endgame strategy

The full symposium program is included below. Recordings of most presentations are available on the CRE YouTube channel. We wish to thank all presenters and the 106 attendees, some of which are captured in the picture below. We are looking forward to organising a 2-day event for World No Tobacco Day 2024.
