Dr Pyi Pyi Phyo
Researcher biography
Dr Pyi Pyi Phyo is a public health expert with extensive experience in global health. Currently pursuing a PhD in Population Health at the University of Auckland, she is dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving public health outcomes.
With a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Myanmar and a Master of Public Health (International) from the University of Leeds, UK, her multidimensional education provides a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between medical practice and public health interventions.
Dr Phyo has a 15-year global health career promoting population health (HIV prevention, drug addiction, tobacco control, nutrition promotion, and non-communicable disease management) across diverse communities. Her journey has taken her through various organizations, including community-based groups, self-help organizations, NGOs, UN agencies, and WHO regional offices in Southeast Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Europe. Additionally, she has collaborated with the Asian Development Bank. Outside work, she cherishes traveling to immerse herself in nature, connect with new faces, embrace different cultures, and taste various cuisines. Her significant contributions to the field of public health include designing and implementing initiatives to prevent and control non-communicable diseases.
Dr Phyo's doctoral research focuses on the illicit tobacco trade, utilizing behavioral science and trials to uncover its complexities. She aims to advance knowledge, shape evidence-based policies, and contribute to global efforts in combating the detrimental effects of illicit tobacco trade on public health and the economy.
