Retail restriction is suggested to be Australia’s next frontier in tobacco control. However, there are limited published examples of longitudinal and real life tobacco retail licensing schemes which may be a mechanism to reduce product availability. In this seminar, I share a case study of a tobacco retail licensing scheme from Australia’s island state, including detailing the Scheme, its Register of licensees, and how it is used to inform tobacco policy. I also suggest some possible benefits of a nationally consistent approach to tobacco retail monitoring and restriction. Based on information from the Register, I provide a trend analysis of tobacco retail density in Tasmania 2000-2020, cross-referenced with government measures that may influence a retailer’s decision to stop selling tobacco. Moreover, I provide an overview of our global systematic review and meta-analysis of tobacco retail availability and its association with smoking behaviours. Finally, I explore if tobacco retail density is associated with smoking prevalence in Tasmania.
