In 2021, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan established a regional ”Tobacco-Free Generation” goal, where the aim was defined as <5% tobacco use by 2040 in the European Union (EU). Already before that, some countries in the region had established their national tobacco endgame goals with varying definitions and timelines. Among the EU Member States, tobacco use prevalence and tobacco control contexts differ, even as the market is partially harmonised through directives on tobacco product standards, advertising and taxation. The EU has supported collaboration and information exchange in tobacco control through Joint Actions, a specific funding instrument in its health programmes. In years 2021–2024, the Joint Action on Tobacco Control 2 (JATC-2) project was tasked to facilitate the development of tobacco endgame strategies in the region through a dedicated work package. In this webinar, I will present the outcomes of this work, and shine light on plans to build on and expand the work to forward-looking tobacco control measures as part of a new joint action.
