Researcher biography

Professor Joshua Byrnes,is the lead of the research theme, Health Systems Innovation and Evaluation in the Centre for the Business and Economics of Health, The University of Queensland. Professor Byrnes is a leading voice in Australian health economics.  He has expertise in economics, health economics and critical appraisal of economic evaluations. He is also highly experienced in trial design, health technology assessment, economic evaluation of healthcare programs including cost-effectiveness and cost-utility modelling, systematic reviews, project management and biostatistics. Josh currently serves as President of the Australian Health Economics Society and is a past Australian President of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research—reflecting his national and global leadership in the field. His work has left a lasting mark on major health policy reforms, from economic evaluations behind plain packaging tobacco laws to pregnancy warning labels on alcohol and the shift to opt‑out arrangements for the MyHealth Record.
