The Tackling Tobacco Program was developed with the Cancer Council NSW to address the unacceptably high smoking rates amongst sub-groups of the NSW population. People experiencing mental health conditions, substance use, homelessness or financial disadvantage have smoking rates of 30% and higher, compared with a general population smoking prevalence rate of 12%. Professor Billie Bonevski led the development of a research program to provide an evidence base for the Tackling Tobacco Program which aimed to build the capacity of community based organisations to support their clients to stop or reduce smoking.

Prof Billie Bonevski is a Professor of Public Health and behavioural scientist. Her research targets population groups at high risk of disease due to sociodemographic, clinical, or cultural factors. Her research is delivered within the community and real world settings such as mental health and drug and alcohol services, Aboriginal health services, and housing and financial aid services.
