To mark International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2021, UQ’s Centre for Research Excellence on Achieving the Tobacco Endgame (Tobacco Endgame CRE) and Centre for Policy Futures, the University of Groningen's Global Health Law Research Centre and School of Strategic and Global Studies, Universitas Indonesia will host a 1-hour online panel event focusing on how the Tobacco Endgame is a matter of health and human rights. Panellists will consider strategic ways on why law (and specifically human rights law, policy & principle) is an important tool for health researchers engaged in advancing the Tobacco Endgame in Australia and internationally. Discussion will also focus on the ways that law can be leveraged for rights-based sustainable, equity-driven human and environmental health and wellbeing outcomes of inter-generational impact.

Panellists include: 

Dr Katerina Tsampi – Katerina is an Assistant Professor of International Law in the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). Katerina specialises in human rights law and tobacco control in the EU, with a strong focus on case law of the European Court of Human Rights. When at the Global Health Law Research Centre, Katerina completed her Post-Doctoral research on assessing novel international and local experiences for smoke-free policies to protect children as part of the Tobacco Endgame. She was previously a Legal Officer at the Greek National Commission for Human Rights (NHRI). In this capacity, she was involved in the human rights monitoring and implementation of health-related policies. Katerina is a qualified lawyer (non-practising). She is member of the Editorial Board of ‘Human Rights Here’, the blog of the Netherlands Network of Human Rights Research (NNHRR).

Dr Claire Brolan – Claire is an interdisciplinary public health scholar who holds joint appointments at the Centre for Policy Futures and School of Public Health at The University of Queensland (UQ) (Australia). She is also a Research Affiliate in the Tobacco Endgame CRE and UQ’s Queensland Centre for Intellectual & Developmental Disability (QCIDD). Claire's multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral research and consultancy work examines policy, planning, governance, and legal challenges that sit at the crossroad of global and public health, sustainable development, health equity and human rights. She sits on several committees including as the community representative on the Global Emergency Care Committee of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) and is the medical sector representative on the Australian Red Cross IHL Advisory Committee (Qld). Claire's also the Honorary Advisor & Thematic Expert for SDG 3 (Health & Wellbeing) in the Legal & Economic Empowerment Global Network (LEEG-NET) high-level human rights & SDG advisory board to the UN.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr Lin Yola – Dr. Lin Yola is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Strategic and Global Studies, Universitas Indonesia, with a strong academic and professional background in urban studies, is best known for her model of ‘Climatically Responsive Urban Configuration’. Her significant works impulse planners, policy makers and stakeholders to confront environmental challenges in strategizing urban spaces to create conducive social living in today's city area. She believes that urban and regional development urgently need global ecological and social justice. Besides her publication on sustainable urban development, Dr. Lin Yola is currently working on sustainable vertical residential development, social-environmental challenges in the living setting of Indonesian coastal communities, and the GNSS technology innovation for informal residents.  Dr. Lin Yola has years of experience in an Academic and Administrative Position in some international university programs. Dr. Lin Yola is also highly active as Publication Editor and Reviewer, Sustainable Development Goals Education Curriculum Developer, International Event Chairman, and Smart Green Lifestyle Campaign Community Services.
