Hosted by ASPIRE2025

THURSDAY 20 May, 9am -10 am (NZST)

***Please note registrations close at midnight, Wednesday 19 May ***

Our webinars address questions that should be of particular interest to people in the public health and smokefree sectors, and others interested in public health policy.

Professor Malone will discuss issues relevant to core strategies outlined in the Government’s Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan proposals.

OVERVIEW

New Zealand has led the world in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and demonstrating how government can act decisively and effectively to protect people from preventable disease and death. The Smokefree2025 goal, if tackled with equally decisive and courageous actions, could make New Zealand the clear winner in the global race to achieve an end to the 20th century-initiated tobacco pandemic. Moving from “tobacco control” thinking to endgame thinking, however, requires confronting long-held and often unstated assumptions and fears that are the biggest obstacles to addressing the structural, political and social dynamics that keep the tobacco pandemic going. What are those assumptions and how can we imagine things otherwise and move beyond status quo thinking?  And which jurisdictions are best positioned to do this?

There will be an opportunity for discussion of the implications for the forthcoming action plan for achieving Smokefree 2025.
