University of Waterloo professor Geoffrey Fong appointed to the Order of Canada
WATERLOO — A professor at the University of Waterloo is to be invested as an officer of the Order of Canada for his work in reducing the global tobacco epidemic.
Geoffrey Fong, a professor in the social psychology department at UW, is among 46 appointees who will be invested by the Governor General of Canada at a ceremony on Dec. 1 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
His research and publications have won Fong a long list of awards, including a 2021 Governor General’s Innovation Award.
Outside of his role as a professor, Fong is also a senior investigator at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and the founder of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation project, a global initiative that is informing tobacco control policies throughout the world.
“His innovative surveys, notably on the impact of policies related to graphic warning labels, standardized packaging and smoke-free public places, have led to significant change and cemented Canada’s reputation as a leader in public health research,” said the news release from the Governor General’s office.
