New ARC Future Fellowship on Tobacco Product Regulation

14 Sep 2022

The NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence on Achieving the Tobacco Endgame Director, Associate Professor Coral Gartner, has been awarded an ARC Future Fellowship to develop new regulatory options for tobacco that aim to minimise the legal market while avoiding the adverse societal and economic impacts of transferring consumer demand to illegal tobacco products.

The project will draw insights from illicit drug policy to understand the potential consequences of greater restrictions on the legal tobacco market. The expected outcomes include an enhanced monitoring system for illicit tobacco and policy recommendations to achieve government goals of reducing smoking rates.

Associate Professor Gartner welcomes inquiries from potential PhD and Honours candidates who are interested in conducting research on this topic with multiple projects available involving qualitative methods, expert knowledge elicitation, behavioural economics, discrete choice experiments, quantitative surveys, or illicit tobacco market monitoring. Interested potential applicants should email their academic CV, university transcripts and a statement outlining the applicant’s interest in the topic to create@uq.edu.au.
